Every year, tens of thousands of Western patients choose China for medical treatment — driven by price differences that routinely reach 70–80%, access to therapies unavailable at home, and growing quality standards among top-tier hospitals. This guide gives you the full picture so you can make an informed decision.
The question isn't whether patients can save money getting treatment in China — it's whether they should trust the quality. The answer depends on what hospital you go to and how you protect your payment.
Here's what drives the medical-tourism-to-China decision:
This isn't theoretical. These are real, published, repeatedly verified figures from JCI-accredited partner hospitals and named networks:
| Treatment | Typical US price | China all-in (typical) | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAR-T cell therapy (cancer) | $500,000+ | $89,000–170,000 | ~70% |
| Knee / hip replacement | ~$58,000 | ~$11,400 | ~80% |
| Dental implants (full set) | $40,000–60,000 | $12,000–18,000 | ~70% |
| Stem cell therapy (T2D) | $50,000–150,000 | $23,000–39,000 | up to 70% |
| Proton therapy | $100,000–180,000 | $40,000–60,000 | ~65% |

China has accelerated its regulatory approvals in recent years. Several therapies — including certain CAR-T products, stem cell programs for diabetes, and advanced immunotherapies — were approved for commercial use in China well before similar approvals became available in the US or Europe. Hainan's Boao Lecheng Pilot Zone goes further: it allows approved-but-unavailable treatments from abroad under special regulations.
In countries with public healthcare systems, waiting months for elective procedures is common. Chinese JCI-accredited hospitals typically schedule consultations and treatments on timelines measured in weeks rather than months — provided you arrange advance coordination, which is exactly what we do.
Not every hospital in China meets the same standard. As an international patient, you need to understand two accreditation frameworks:
JCI is the global gold standard for hospital accreditation. It evaluates hospitals across multiple dimensions — patient rights, infection control, medication management, facility safety, and clinical outcomes — against internationally benchmarked criteria. Only hospitals meeting these standards earn and retain JCI status. JCI closed new surveys in China in 2023, so existing accreditations are maintained through regular re-checks rather than fresh surveys.
This is China's domestic classification system. Grade 3A is the highest tier — these are the country's top academic medical centers. Examples in our network include Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing, Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai, West China Hospital in Chengdu, Fuwai Hospital in Beijing (cardiology specialist), and Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Many hold both Grade 3A status and JCI accreditation simultaneously.
We only coordinate with hospitals whose credentials we can verify. Here are the institutions already named and discussed on our site:
We do not claim partnerships or endorsements beyond what's been publicly acknowledged and verified. Every hospital's accreditation status is checked before onboarding and re-checked regularly.
Even at a fraction of the price, sending a large sum of money to a foreign hospital carries risk. That's why escrow isn't optional — it's foundational.
With escrow:

If any of these resonate, a free case review is the lowest-friction next step. No payment required. Just your records and a conversation.
The primary reason is cost: Western patients consistently save 70–80% compared to US list prices for equivalent treatments at JCI-accredited hospitals in China. But cost savings alone don't explain the trend. Chinese Grade 3A hospitals combine world-class facilities with physicians trained internationally, advanced technology (including domestically manufactured therapies like CAR-T), and government-backed quality standards. Many patients also find shorter wait times and access to treatments approved in China but not yet available in their home countries.
Safety depends on which hospital you choose. China has thousands of hospitals, but only those holding current JCI accreditation or China's CIHA-equivalent standard meet internationally recognized patient-safety benchmarks. We only coordinate with hospitals we've independently verified — licensed for international patient care, with English-speaking staff, standardized sterilization protocols, and documented infection-control procedures. We never coordinate with unlicensed clinics or unauthorized facilities.
Escrow means your payment is held by an independent third-party escrow agent — not sent directly to the hospital or agency. Funds are released in stages tied to documented treatment milestones. If the hospital fails to deliver committed services, the remaining funds stay frozen while the dispute is resolved. Common red flags include agents who refuse to name specific hospitals or provide their JCI accreditation numbers, quotes that don't itemize individual treatment costs, pressure to pay within 24–48 hours, websites promising guaranteed success rates or cure percentages, requests to pay via personal bank transfers or cryptocurrency, and coordinators who won't let you speak directly with the treating physician before committing. China's top international departments handle tens of thousands of foreign patients annually. Our partner hospitals have dedicated international patient centers with English-speaking medical coordinators, translators, and many physicians with overseas training or English proficiency. Every case includes translation support for consultations, informed consent, and discharge instructions.
Some international health plans and expat policies cover treatment at JCI-accredited hospitals abroad, and a few insurers direct-bill certain Chinese international hospitals. We can help you check your policy, request a Guarantee of Payment where available, and structure invoices for out-of-network reimbursement. Add your insurer to your quote request and we'll include this in your case review.
Send your diagnosis and we'll shortlist hospitals and give you a transparent, line-item quote within 24 hours. No obligation, no pressure.
