Cancer Treatment in China: Real Costs, Real Hospitals, Escrowed

The complete 2026 guide — what cancer treatment in China actually costs, which JCI-accredited hospitals deliver it, and how the escrow structure protects your money at every step.

Updated August 2026. Every year, tens of thousands of Western patients travel to China for cancer care — driven by therapies approved there that are unavailable or unaffordable at home, and by price differences that routinely reach 80–90%. This guide gives you the real numbers, the real hospitals, and the one structural safeguard most agencies won't give you: escrow.

1. What cancer treatment in China actually costs

These are typical all-in ranges from JCI-accredited partner hospitals in 2025–2026. "All-in" means hospital fees, physician fees, medications, nursing, room, and coordination — no surprise line items.

TherapyTypical US priceChina all-inSavings
CAR-T cell therapy$500,000+~$60,000~88%
Immunotherapy (PD-1/PD-L1)$150,000–250,000/yr$25,000–45,000/yr~80%
Proton therapy$100,000–180,000$30,000–60,000~70%
Robotic surgery (Da Vinci)$60,000–120,000$20,000–40,000~65%
Radiation (IMRT/SBRT)$30,000–80,000$8,000–18,000~75%
Diagnostic workup (PET-CT, biopsy, panels)$8,000–25,000$1,500–4,000~80%

Why the gap is real: the same CAR-T product approved by China's NMPA and manufactured domestically costs a fraction of US list prices. Drug pricing, hospital economics, and insurance structures are fundamentally different — and the quality standard (JCI accreditation, international physicians) is comparable.

2. Real hospitals — the JCI-accredited network

We coordinate with a verified network of hospitals licensed for international patients. The flagship destination is the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone — China's designated medical tourism free trade zone, where treatments approved abroad (but not yet in mainland China) can be legally used.

Boao Lecheng Pilot Zone (Hainan)

  • China's only "medical tourism + free trade port" zone; policy opened further in December 2025.
  • 865,000+ visits in the past year — up 109% year over year; overseas patients up 6×.
  • Hospitals licensed for international cancer care, stem cell programs, and imported advanced therapies.
  • Visa-free entry for citizens of 86 countries — you can fly into Hainan without a visa.

Mainland JCI-accredited cancer centers

  • Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou-based international hospitals with English-speaking oncology teams.
  • Full multidisciplinary tumor boards, second-opinion review, and pathology consultation.
  • Direct coordination with Chinese physicians who routinely treat international patients.
⚠️ Avoid the unlicensed middle: a large share of "China cancer treatment" agencies are unlicensed brokers marking up hospital prices 30–60% and taking your money upfront with zero recourse. We exist to remove exactly that risk — verify the hospital, publish the price, hold the money in escrow.

3. Why escrow changes everything

In traditional medical tourism, you wire 100% of the fee to an agency before you board the plane. If the hospital doesn't match the brochure — or the agency disappears — your money is gone.

How our escrow works:

  1. Agreement first. You sign a treatment agreement with the hospital that itemizes every service and cost.
  2. Escrow funded. Your payment goes to an independent third-party escrow agent, not to us and not to the hospital.
  3. Milestone releases. Funds are released in stages tied to documented milestones: admission, procedure start, procedure complete, discharge.
  4. Dispute protection. If care isn't delivered as agreed, funds stay frozen until the dispute is resolved.

You pay the hospital for treatment — not us for "access." Our coordination fee is a separate, disclosed line item, agreed in writing before anything is funded.

4. The process, step by step

  1. Free case review (24h). Send your diagnosis, imaging, and pathology reports. A medical coordinator confirms eligibility and shortlists 2–3 hospitals.
  2. Physician consult. A video consult with the treating physician at the chosen hospital. You hear the plan from the doctor, not a salesperson.
  3. All-in quote. Itemized quote in writing: treatment, hospital stay, medication, translation, travel coordination.
  4. Escrow + booking. Fund escrow, book flights, receive visa support and travel logistics.
  5. Treatment & follow-up. A coordinator is on the ground throughout. Remote follow-up continues after you return home.

5. FAQ — cancer treatment in China

Is CAR-T in China the same as CAR-T in the US?

The same technology platform, approved by China's NMPA and manufactured domestically. Clinical protocols are reviewed by the hospital's tumor board. Always bring your US records for a full eligibility review — not every patient qualifies for every therapy.

Can I use my US insurance?

Most US insurers do not cover care abroad. However, many patients still save 70–90% out-of-pocket versus US list prices. We can provide documentation for reimbursement claims where applicable.

Do I need a visa?

For Hainan: no visa for citizens of 86 countries (short stay). For mainland hospitals, we arrange the appropriate medical visa — the process takes 5–10 business days.

What if the treatment is delayed or cancelled?

Escrow funds are only released as milestones are met. If the hospital cancels, unreleased funds are returned to you in full, minus only documented third-party costs.

Is it ethical / legal?

Yes. Treating international patients in licensed Chinese hospitals is legal and government-supported. Every program we coordinate is performed by licensed physicians at licensed facilities, under a signed treatment agreement.

Important: outcomes vary by patient, disease stage, and treatment. We never promise cures. The escrow protects your money, not the medical outcome — always get a second opinion and a clear written treatment plan before committing.
